Camp

Kokoko Camp, Tanzania

Ruaha National Park, Tanzania

About This Property

Kokoko Camp is an exclusive-use, boutique safari camp in Ruaha National Park, Tanzania, set beside the dry Mwagusi River and surrounded by ancient baobabs, woodland and rugged wilderness.

Kokoko is deliberately small and authentic, with just three guest tents accommodating a maximum of six guests. The entire camp is booked exclusively, with a private guide and vehicle, making it particularly well suited to families or small groups wanting a completely private safari experience.

The accommodation is expedition-style luxury, rather than a conventional five-star lodge. Each tent has comfortable double or twin beds, an en-suite bathroom with flushing toilet and hand basin, and an outdoor safari-style bucket shower. The tents are constructed with mosquito-net mesh to maximise the views, and the retractable weatherproof roof can be opened at night for stargazing directly from your bed.

The safari experience is the main focus. Guests have a private guide and vehicle and can enjoy game drives, walking safaris and night drives, with the flexibility to tailor activities around their interests. Ruaha is particularly rewarding for elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah and African wild dog, as well as less commonly seen species such as greater kudu, sable and roan antelope.

Dining is intentionally informal and immersive. Meals are cooked over an open fire, with breakfast and lunch generally enjoyed in the shade around camp and special dinners sometimes arranged in the dry Mwagusi Riverbed, illuminated by lanterns.

The camp operates seasonally from June to November and closes from December through May. The closest airstrip is Msembe, approximately a 45-minute drive from camp. Children from 12 years and older are accepted, reflecting the walking-safari focus and exposed nature of the camp.

Kokoko is therefore best described as a very private, adventurous and immersive safari camp, where the emphasis is on wilderness, walking, guiding and being close to nature rather than extensive lodge facilities. It would be an excellent choice for experienced safari travellers or a small private group looking for something particularly authentic and exclusive.
