Angama Amboseli Luxury Tented Camp, Kenya

Amboseli National Park for views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Kenya

About This Property

Angama Amboseli is a high-end, contemporary safari camp in the 5,700-acre Kimana Sanctuary, in the greater Amboseli ecosystem. Its setting is one of its biggest attractions: the camp looks directly towards Mount Kilimanjaro, and the sanctuary is particularly renowned for elephants, including the famous Super Tusker elephants.

The camp has just 10 Guest Suites, making it intimate despite its very polished luxury feel. The suites have floor-to-ceiling screened doors designed to maximise the views of Kilimanjaro, along with private outdoor areas, en-suite bathrooms, lounge space, personal bars, safes, Wi-Fi and laundry service. The camp also has interconnected family suites.

The design is contemporary African rather than traditional safari-rustic. There is a strong emphasis on indoor-outdoor living, with the Guest Area incorporating dining spaces, a baraza with a fire pit, and plenty of places to sit and enjoy the views.

One of the particularly distinctive features is the photographic studio. Guests can get help with camera equipment, photography tutorials, editing and printing, which makes Angama Amboseli especially interesting for anyone who enjoys wildlife photography. The Studios area also includes a Safari Shop, Art Gallery, Games Room and Weaving Studio.

The swimming pool is another highlight. It overlooks a specially constructed elephant drinking trough, so elephants can come into the area while guests are relaxing around the pool. This is very much an elephant-focused camp, and the opportunity to see large herds and Super Tuskers is one of its major selling points.

Safari activities include morning and afternoon game drives, night drives, guided walking safaris, cultural experiences, sundowners and visits into Amboseli National Park. The private Kimana Sanctuary allows considerable flexibility, including early departures and returning after dark. Amboseli National Park itself is approximately 45 minutes from camp according to Angama's fact sheet.

The camp is full board, with three meals daily and selected house drinks included. Laundry, Wi-Fi, guided safaris, walking safaris, transfers from Kimana Airfield and emergency medical evacuation are also included in the published package.

In terms of style, I would put Angama Amboseli firmly in the luxury end of the Amboseli market. Compared with Tawi Lodge, it is more contemporary, more design-led and more polished, with a stronger emphasis on photography, personalised experiences and high-end service. Tawi has more of that classic, intimate safari-lodge character.

If choosing between the two, I'd favour Angama Amboseli for a special occasion, honeymoon or luxury-focused safari, particularly if Kilimanjaro views and elephants are priorities. I'd favour Tawi if you prefer a smaller, more traditional and relaxed safari-lodge atmosphere.
