Caprivi Strip
About
The Caprivi Strip is a narrow extension of north-eastern Namibia that stretches eastward between Angola and Botswana, reaching toward Zambia and Zimbabwe. Today, it is officially known as the Zambezi Region, a name introduced in 2013 to better reflect the area’s key river system and cultural identity.
This unique geographical corridor is shaped by the Zambezi, Okavango, Kwando, and Linyanti rivers, creating one of the most water-rich regions in Namibia. Unlike much of the country, which is arid, the Zambezi Region features lush floodplains, wetlands, river channels, and dense vegetation, supporting a high concentration of wildlife and bird species.
Today, the area forms part of the greater Zambezi ecosystem and is home to lush riverine landscapes, floodplains, and protected areas such as Bwabwata, Mudumu, and Nkasa Rupara National Parks. It supports an exceptional concentration of wildlife, including large elephant herds, hippos, crocodiles, lions, buffalo, and rare antelope species such as red lechwe, sable, and roan. The region is also a premier birding destination, with rich wetland habitats attracting a wide variety of waterbirds and migratory species.
