Private Game Reserve

Godwana Private Game Reserve, Mossel Bay

South African Garden Route, Cape Town, South Africa

About This Property

Gondwana Private Game Reserve is a luxury Big Five private game reserve on South Africa’s Garden Route, near Mossel Bay in the Western Cape. It is particularly attractive as a safari extension to Cape Town because it is malaria-free and less than four hours by road from Cape Town, with George Airport approximately 45 minutes away.

The reserve is distinctive because it combines a traditional Big Five safari with the Cape Floral Kingdom and Fynbos landscape. It covers approximately 11,000 hectares according to its current fact sheet, although some newer tourism listings quote a larger conservation area. The landscape features rolling hills, mountains, valleys and indigenous Fynbos rather than the classic savannah scenery found in Kruger or Botswana.

Gondwana offers opportunities to see the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo — as well as giraffe, hippo, cheetah, Cape mountain zebra, eland and numerous antelope species. Game drives are conducted in open safari vehicles with experienced field guides, with morning and afternoon drives included in full-board packages.

Accommodation ranges from the contemporary Kwena Lodge suites to spacious private villas and exclusive-use properties. Kwena has 14 stand-alone suites, while the larger villas work particularly well for families or groups. Ulubisi House and Black Rhino House offer a more private, exclusive safari experience with dedicated staff, while Lehele Villas are specifically designed for families with children.

Beyond game drives, activities include guided Fynbos walks, Big Five walking experiences, spa treatments, mountain biking, hiking, fishing and the Junior Ranger programme. The reserve also offers special family-oriented activities, including Bokkie Drives for younger children.

Conservation is a major part of the experience. Gondwana focuses on rewilding, habitat restoration and protecting endangered species, including rhino, Cape mountain zebra, bontebok and cheetah. A conservation fee is charged to guests and contributes towards conservation programmes, anti-poaching initiatives and biodiversity protection.

For a Cape Town and Garden Route itinerary, Gondwana works particularly well as a 2–3 night safari stop between the Garden Route and Cape Town. It is not as wilderness-remote as Botswana, Zambia or the Kruger region, but its accessibility, malaria-free setting, Big Five wildlife and Fynbos environment make it a very convenient way to add a safari to a Western Cape holiday.
