South African Garden Route, Cape Town
About
The Garden Route is one of South Africa’s most scenic self-drive and touring regions, stretching along the southern coastline of the Western and Eastern Cape. The classic route runs from around Mossel Bay through George, Wilderness, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay to Storms River and Tsitsikamma, with Oudtshoorn and the Klein Karoo providing an excellent inland extension.
From Cape Town
The Garden Route works particularly well as an extension to a Cape Town itinerary. Knysna is roughly 500 km from Cape Town, while the Tsitsikamma section is around 615 km away. The N2 is generally a good road, making this an enjoyable road trip rather than simply a transfer.
For a luxury itinerary, I would allow 4–6 nights rather than trying to cover everything in two or three days. The best approach is to make several stops and enjoy the scenery, rather than spending most of the time driving.
Wilderness
Wilderness is one of the quieter and more beautiful sections of the route, with lakes, rivers, indigenous forest, beaches and mountains. It is particularly good for kayaking, canoeing, hiking and relaxed coastal scenery. It forms part of the Garden Route National Park.
Knysna
Knysna is one of the Garden Route's main highlights. It sits around a beautiful lagoon surrounded by forest and mountains, with the dramatic Knysna Heads providing the iconic backdrop. There are boat trips, forest walks, beaches, restaurants, galleries and opportunities for sailing and other water activities.
For a more sophisticated or relaxed stay, Knysna is a good base for exploring the surrounding area without changing hotels every night.
Plettenberg Bay
Plettenberg Bay, or Plett, is arguably the most upmarket seaside destination on the Garden Route. It has beautiful beaches, excellent restaurants, boutique hotels and access to nature reserves and marine activities. It is also a good base for exploring Nature's Valley and Robberg Nature Reserve.
Whale and dolphin watching is possible along the coast, with marine life particularly associated with the waters around Plettenberg Bay.
Tsitsikamma
Tsitsikamma is the more dramatic, adventure-oriented part of the Garden Route, with indigenous forest, rugged coastline, cliffs, rivers and suspension bridges. The national park offers hiking, kayaking, birdwatching and spectacular coastal scenery.
The Otter Trail is particularly famous, although it is a multi-day hiking experience rather than a casual excursion.
Oudtshoorn & the Klein Karoo
Oudtshoorn makes an excellent inland detour. It is famous for its ostrich farms and the Cango Caves, and the surrounding Klein Karoo landscape is dramatically different from the lush coastline. The combination of mountains, semi-desert scenery, vineyards and historic towns makes it worthwhile if you have enough time.
What makes the Garden Route special
The attraction is really the variety. Within one journey you can experience beaches and lagoons, indigenous forests, mountains, wildlife, hiking, marine activities, small coastal towns, excellent food and wine, and the very different landscapes of the Klein Karoo.
For a luxury South African holiday, I would particularly recommend combining Cape Town → Hermanus/Whale Coast → Garden Route → Eastern Cape safari, rather than treating the Garden Route as a standalone destination. It creates a very good progression from city and wine country to coast, forests and finally safari.
If you tell me how many nights you have, I can also give you the best luxury Garden Route itinerary from Cape Town, including where to stay each night and which stops are worth skipping.
