Buffelsdrift Game Lodge, OudtshoornSouth African Garden Route, Cape Town, South Africa
About This Property
Buffelsdrift Game Lodge is a luxury tented safari lodge in the Klein Karoo, approximately 6.5 km outside Oudtshoorn, at the foot of the Swartberg Mountains. It is particularly well positioned for combining a Garden Route journey with the Cango Caves, ostrich farms and the wider Klein Karoo.
The lodge is built around a spectacular 5-hectare natural waterhole, which is one of its defining features. Guests can often see hippos and other wildlife around the water, while the surrounding landscape provides views towards the Swartberg Mountains. The setting feels more like an authentic Karoo bush camp than a conventional hotel.
Accommodation is entirely luxury tented, with Luxury Waterhole Tents, Luxury Horizon View Tents and Luxury Family Tents. The Waterhole Tents are particularly desirable because they have private decks immediately beside the waterhole, allowing guests to relax and watch wildlife from their own accommodation. Family Tents have two bedrooms with an inter leading shared bathroom and can accommodate up to five people.
Wildlife activities are a major part of the stay. The lodge offers bush safaris, night drives, meerkat safaris, elephant experiences, lion experiences and a free-roaming cheetah experience. The two-hour night drives are particularly interesting for spotting nocturnal species such as caracal, genet, porcupine, aardvark and aardwolf.
The meerkat safari is an early-morning experience, while the elephant activities have an educational focus. The lodge also offers a free-roaming cheetah experience designed around observing and learning about the animals in their environment.
Dining is centered around the Buffelsdrift Restaurant, which serves à la carte Karoo cuisine using homemade dishes and local produce. There is also an open-air bar and the Elephant Lapa, a traditional thatched boma-style venue overlooking the bush veld and waterhole, suitable for outdoor dinners and functions.
The lodge also has a spa and swimming pool, with the pool overlooking the surrounding bush veld and Swartberg Mountains. A large wooden deck around the lodge provides excellent opportunities for simply relaxing and watching wildlife at the waterhole.
For location, Buffelsdrift is approximately five hours by road from Cape Town and around one hour from George Airport. It is also only about 300 meters from the road leading towards the Cango Caves, making it an especially convenient base for exploring Oudtshoorn.
Overall, Buffelsdrift is best suited to travellers looking for a comfortable, authentic tented safari experience combined with the attractions of Oudtshoorn and the Klein Karoo. Its biggest strengths are the dramatic mountain setting, waterhole-viewing opportunities, unusual wildlife experiences and convenient access to the Cango Caves.
