Garden Route Game Lodge, AlbertiniaSouth African Garden Route, Cape Town, South Africa
About This Property
Garden Route Game Lodge is a family-owned, malaria-free private game reserve near Albertinia, at the western gateway to the Garden Route. It is approximately 3½ hours’ scenic drive from Cape Town, making it one of the more accessible safari options for a Cape Town and Garden Route itinerary.
The reserve is home to the Big Five, including lion, elephant, buffalo, white rhino and cheetah, together with giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, springbok, eland and numerous smaller mammals and bird species. Morning and afternoon game drives are conducted in open Land Rovers with experienced guides, with sun downer stops offering particularly attractive views across the reserve.
Accommodation consists of Main Lodge Rooms, private Bush Chalets and Sunset Ridge Luxury Suites. The Sunset Ridge accommodation is the more luxurious option, with private decks, fireplaces, air conditioning, Nespresso machines and, in selected suites, private heated plunge pools. Some suites also have outdoor baths and showers overlooking the bush.
The lodge has a strong family focus. Children of all ages can join game drives when accompanied by an adult, while the Kids Bushwise Activity Programme includes children's game drives, guided bush walks, insect walks and fishing. Childminding is also available, and there are two children's play areas.
Wellness is provided by the Ayana Spa, where guests can enjoy massages and signature treatments after a day on safari. There are also heated and cold swimming pools, while the lodge's African-style dining focuses on local produce, free-range game meats and South African wines.
Dining is centered around Serengeti's Restaurant, with both buffet and à la carte options, while the African Boma provides outdoor South African braai-style dining. There is also a Serengeti Bar, Bush Bar and pool terrace.
The lodge can also offer a fully inclusive package, which may include accommodation, meals, local drinks, minibar items, room service, morning and afternoon game drives, bush walks, spa experiences, picnics, Junior Ranger activities, Wi-Fi and laundry.
Overall, Garden Route Game Lodge is best suited to travelers wanting a convenient, family-friendly Big Five safari experience without travelling to a malaria area. It is more accessible and generally more informal than the exclusive private reserves of the Eastern Cape, but its combination of wildlife, family facilities, spa, pools and proximity to Cape Town makes it a practical Garden Route safari stop.
